shoe polish
genius adverts.
i want to design something genius, this advert is so simple yet amazingly effective, the frustrating thing is, its so damn obvious, yet i idnt think of it.
this is the kind of thing i aspire to become.
i found both of these in the book creative advertising, think i might buy that book, it just makes sense, ya know, its like a book for life, a designers life obviously, but its like a survial guide.

letter press
i love it. Seriously once you've come up with that really strong idea you can show off and create something so imperfect and say a bit f you to our computer generated world. Im not a big fan of text, i have limited understanding but this i get. letter press is hands on creativity and a joy to work with.
Out of everything i've done this term this is without a doubt my favorite and probably the most effective. Plus i'm a smart arse that loves my phrase, i think that defiantly for fills the brief of boundaries! this is my biggest boundary, and i hate it, boundaries are there to be pushed, broken... na mate there there so you can stay commercial and within them otherwise you'll be morally great but dead poor.

final editorial illustration.
This is my final editorial illustration. Ihad so many ideas that i could quite exicute sucessfully enough but im proud of my final outcome, its simple and a realistic illustration. I have also used my new skills on photoshop and used them with water colour, something im very strong with.
i have put this into photoshop and burn the colours slightly and chnaged the contrast because im not sure if its my screen or my scanner but it doesnt look colourful enough, in real life its wonderful. promise....

main income or WI?
this is another piece for visual equations. M y intended rhetoric is that the viewer is not sure which semantic this image belongs to. Is she the earner of the main income or is she a winner of a competition for her baking skills.
i wanted to find a strong successful looking woman, with an air of elegance abut her, yet feminine enough to hint an opposite connotation. This found image is perfect as she's almost blank, giving nothing away, as though she were a harsh business woman, yet delicate enough to suggest incompetence. ( trying to find a better word)
a simple sketch from poole
editorial equation.
i would like you to consider this image. To understnd from a female view point. To empathise. She, like most of us, strives for beauty, because society says we should be, we should be slim, yet curvy, sophisticated, lady like, feminine, beautiful. Women sacrifice so much, to fit into this sterotype, we use corsets, diets, makeup, hair dye, wax, facials pedicures. why? to fit into that sterotype, the one we all hate. it makes no sense, this illustration is intended to highlight that, women go through so much, and yet sum feel as though they cant indulge in a simple comfort like food, because beauty is a set rule. beauty requires discipline and sacrifice. Now to me that seems like antithisis how 2 complete opposites make one sad twisted truth.

Dada poem and illustration
discover saints friendly hurry apart come sad gravity home strength help the new sky addict.
we were told to cut out words, as many as we wanted then pick them out at random to create a dada poem, this is my poem.
From this poem we are to create an image, to almost translate it. My translation is the transition into adulthood, its a relevent theme to me at the moment also, but the word saint brought purity to mind, i.e. a child, and from there i realised a child is not bound by 'sad gravity' they are not even aware of it, they dream, idealise, and play unaware of the responsibility that will fall upon them, the strength they will need to leave that innocence behind.

This is my Poole icon made in illustrator. i found using illustrator really hard and struggled to make a simplistic icon, that was easily recognisable. i think this was the biggest success, although they do look like monks praying. Perhaps if i changed the angle of their heads they would look less like they were praying.
This is the first stage of my editorial illustration, during this week i intend to edit it in various different ways. i plan to use water colour to fill it in and also use pattern, from signature pool pottery designs. the era of Poole pottery that i have focused on is the transition from the 50's to the 60's as the company was regenerated, a new designer took over and revamped the company. ill keep you updated on its progress.

Letter Press
Is probably my favorite form of expression, as far as typography goes.I had never used letter press before, yet i did attempt to make my own at a-level and they were quite successful although my hands were ripped to shreds from carving letters out of wood. The effect that you get from then though is so unique, something that you could never create on photoshop or illustrator. A lot of these skills are vanishing and being replaced by technology. My opinion is that their just lazy, would much prefer to sit in front of a laptop that to get out their and experience artistic forms hands on. When using a technique such a letter press, the letters speak to you, from picking letters and inks and things going wrong you create something truly unique and imperfect.

type with tape
Today we were given the brief for type and tape. Sally reviled an immense amount of tape and let us loose around the uni, it was a great day as everyone come up with something different and the brief was so free that we could have done anything. I get the feeling that this first year will be very expressive much like this brief, but by the second year i think it'll change completely. sad really because im enjoying the freedom.
We like the hooligan student we are wondered around uni defacing everything we saw with a tag of what it was, in our new typeface.

quotes,
I recently caught the blogging bug and decided to create another, hhttp://thingswhatsmartpeoplesay.blogspot.com/ and it's really inspireing me. i find that words are more inspiring than paintings or designs, one word can spark so many different connotations and feelings. especially since i've been at aucb, we have weekly lectures on text an image and its suddenly starting to sink in, were subjected to adverts all throughout the day and when you really stop and concider them you see so much more i feel like my eyes have been opened and my subconcious awakened.
One of my favorite quotes from my other blog is one from my tutor Sally i have already posted it on here once, "your work reflects the boundaries of your creative thinking." she just squashed it into a normal sentance and for most it vasnished as most information does, but it struck me. stopped me in my tracks, i have to be original, different, stop people in their tracks much like that quote did for me.

happy place
i would like to make a recomendation www.helpmechill.com for when your designing and need to get into that creative zone, give it a go, its really helps me, just background music, it helps me forget everyday fiddle faddle and focus on the prject at hand.
i take it back...
The next chapter...
The one thing that i've found most difficult on this course everything is all about the quality of the idea plus how effective it is. Instead of designing for me I'm now designing for an audience my first point of consideration is what you (the audience) would see in what I'm doing. We've started these sessions with Anna, analyzing adverts and art, looking in depth to the messages in every day design that we just skim over and miss or the ones we just know without even realizing. To create an image that can be interpreted in any way is a shocking revelation, i may have one idea or viewpoint, yet someone could approach what i have created in such a different way and get completely the wrong message.
Its like this is the puberty stage of design I'm not yet grounded and clear, but I'm getting there, next year i imagine i'll have a cocky teenage attitude, but this year I'm completely in shock as to what the hell is going on.

ive been told to update my blog...
so this is for matt, although i have nothing really to talk about. Thursday was the night of the freshers bar crawl, and since that moment ive been having a lazy day, i spent the whole of Friday on the sofa and the whole of today looking a mess whilst sketching for my crit on Tuesday. We have been given a brief to create an editorial illustration for the article concerning the regeneration of seaside towns, ours is based on Poole quay. exciting right? so, back to the point iv been sketching out ideas all day and am still unsure of what to do. i wanted some kind of symbol to represent regeneration, whilst adding a hint of sea side/ Poole. ive been considering opening a new door, revealing a new look, like changing room curtain, stage curtain, or new chapter in a book. .. ill keep you updated as to how i get on, but at the moment im so unsure. help!

today i relized...
im this close to growing up and becoming an adult, and its scares me. It suddenly dawned on me when we received our first brief today, its to create a editorial illustration, i was super excited because ive always wanted my own article of which i illustrate, and the thought of illustrating someone else's article in a simplistic eye catching way, that summarises that article, and for fills a brief was like whoa. through out all my art courses, the brief was a rough guideline for those who didn't know where to go or what to do, but now its a regimented set of rules. Ive progressed to the next level, a serious level. i need to nail this illustration.

quote of the week....
"your work reflects the boundaries of your creative thinking." -Sally (my tutor)
Today at uni...
we arrived at 11am got given a hand out then had to hang around until 1.30, had another lecture then had to come back at 3.40. and so far .... ive achieved nothing. i must admit im a little bit worried this course isnt creative enough, today was more like a lesson in sociology and graphic design buzz words. On a good note, ive booked my 2nd dyslexia test and if that comes out positive i may get a grant.

Ringo's not friends with Gigi.
we had a cat stand off today when both laid claim to our house. Ooops.
im going to bake a cake...
i've decided to bake as cake, simply because im not eating enough eggs. its in the oven now in my heart shaped tin ... lets hope it comes out good. was a really simple recipe actually, 175g sugar 175g self raising flour and 175g butter, 3 eggs, all the sweeties you can afford, icing sugar and alott'a love.

Just got home from V
.. I officially love that club. i dont know if its the artist in me or what, but when an awesome song comes on that i lose myself in and i look up at lasers darting around the smokey church ceiling, i just get in this enlightened place that i never want to leave. im sure it'll wear off soon, like once ive been a few times, but i hope it doesnt. it really is awe-some. the acoustics are good the venues beautiful, on a week night the drinks are cheap, and the mix of musics good, the rest is up to you.
ive decided i would like V to inspire me in some way whilst im at ACUB. i suppose its a kind of opposite, juxtaposed situation, a nightclub in a church, works for me though.

my first week....
..has been full of sitting in lecture in the lecture theatre being talked at. today though we did do some art, which was really quite refreshing, we went to poole harbour and took pictures and sketched. it was nice to feel creative again. Since i broke up from my A-levels ive really missed that feeling of pride you get when you create and nuture a peice of art and come out with a final peice thats transformed into something amazing.
I cant wait till we start our course, monday we get our offical timetable and once i have that information i can feel safe and know exactly where im going and have something to focus on, spend my time doing.
i have so much stuff to organise, signing up with a doctor to help cure my freshers flu. Taking in my passport photo, for my student ID. and other such things...
Have to get organised and be as adault as i can manage.
This year is going to be interesting i can just tell....
